Zarafa, een in Nederland ontwikkeld alternatief voor Microsofts mailserver Exchange, neemt bij gemeenten in populariteit toe. In twee jaar tijd haalde het in Nederland een marktaandeel van 5 procent. In Nederland werken inmiddels twaalf gemeenten met Zarafa, in Vlaanderen zijn het er 22. Vooral bij middelgrote gemeenten groeit de belangstelling.

Europe’s public administrations are needlessly spending millions by not tackling their dependency on a single proprietary system for their desktop computers and office applications. This has already led to suboptimal choices in licensing for and use of desktop software and desktop IT applications. It is also causing inflated prices for desktop IT solutions while lowering their quality by hindering innovation. Governments may be hoodwinked into believing that switching to a vendor-independent desktop PC infrastructure is costly.

EC legt accent op uitwissel baarheid in open source

De Europese Commissie wil het makkelijker maken voor overheden om de applicaties te hergebruiken die zijn ontwikkeld voor Europese instituten. Voor nieuw te ontwikkelen applicaties wil het daarom bij voorkeur open-sourcesoftware inzetten. Dat zijn de twee belangrijkste bijstellingen in het open-sourcebeleid van de Europese Commissie.
